The Destination

Port Douglas — Where the Tropics Come Alive

Port Douglas occupies a rare stretch of coastline where ancient rainforest tumbles down to meet the Coral Sea. This small, unhurried village has drawn travellers for decades — not with high-rises and theme parks, but with genuine natural wonder and a pace of life that encourages you to slow down.

Four Mile Beach is the centrepiece — a sweeping crescent of pale sand framed by coconut palms and backed by the green ridgeline of the Daintree. Morning walkers share the shore with kites and ospreys, and the warm Coral Sea makes swimming a year-round pleasure.

Macrossan Street, the village heart, delivers a surprisingly sophisticated food and shopping scene for a town of its size. Open-air cafés, boutique galleries, and locally owned restaurants line both sides, and everything is close enough to reach on foot from The Meridian. After sunset, the atmosphere turns gently lively without ever losing its tropical ease.

Common Questions

Before You Book

Practical answers to the questions travellers ask most about Meridian Port Douglas.

Is Meridian Port Douglas adults-only?

Yes. Meridian Port Douglas is a strictly adults-only property. It is not appropriate for families with children. This is a deliberate choice that keeps the atmosphere calm and the pool area quiet — which is exactly the point if you are looking for a peaceful tropical escape.

How close is it to Macrossan Street?

150 metres. Macrossan Street — the main restaurant, café, bar, and boutique strip in Port Douglas — is around a two-minute walk from the property. For evening dining or morning coffee, a car is not needed.

How close is it to Four Mile Beach?

200 metres — a short and easy walk. Four Mile Beach is not right outside the gate, but it is close enough that you can walk there in a couple of minutes without any effort. The property is not a beachfront resort, but it is genuinely convenient to the beach.

Are the apartments self-catered?

Yes. Studios have a kitchenette; 1-bedroom apartments have a full kitchen. There is no on-site restaurant — the village on Macrossan Street handles dining, and the property has an outdoor BBQ area. The self-catered format suits guests who prefer to cook some meals and dine out on others.

Do all rooms have direct pool access?

No. Swim-up / direct pool-access rooms are a select category of ground-floor apartments. If pool access from your private deck is important to your stay, choose the Swim-Up Studio or Swim-Up 1-Bedroom apartment type specifically. Upper-floor and garden apartments use the shared lagoon pool area.

Is it better suited to couples or solo travellers?

Both. Couples are the most common guests — the adults-only atmosphere, swim-up rooms, and Port Douglas village setting make it a natural romantic escape. Solo travellers also find it well suited: the studio format is practical, the walkability to the village removes the need for a car on most days, and the quiet adults-only environment avoids the noise of a family resort.

Practical Information

Getting There

Cairns Airport (CNS) is approximately 70 minutes by car along a scenic coastal highway. Airport shuttle services run daily and can be pre-booked.

The drive north from Cairns is spectacular in its own right, passing through cane fields, coastal rainforest, and scenic lookouts over the Coral Sea.

Once in Port Douglas, a car is handy for day trips but not essential — Macrossan Street and the beach are both an easy walk from The Meridian. Free parking is included for guests who drive.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from May to October is the most popular time — clear skies, lower humidity, and perfect conditions for reef trips and rainforest walks.

The wet season (November to April) brings warmer temperatures, lush green landscapes, and fewer crowds. Brief tropical downpours refresh the air, and coral spawning events make this a special time for divers.

Stinger nets are in place at Four Mile Beach during the warmer months, ensuring safe swimming year-round.
